Society's Stand On College

Higher education was strongly discouraged, those that did pursue it were gossiped about by the JWs.

If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things.   .....all evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years.  ....as a young person you will never fulfill any career that this system offers.  If you are in high school and thinking about a college education,  it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!

Such parents have also given serious thought to what they want their children to do with their lives. Do they want them to bring honor to the family? to get rich? or to be able to look after the parents in their old age? For a family without a Christian faith, such goals are understandable. But surely a Christian has higher goals.

8 But for us who are alert to the significance of world events in the light of Bible prophecy, there are much stronger reasons for not putting a worldly career foremost in life. (Matthew 24:3-14) We might compare ourselves to a person that sees a building with a sign: “This Company Going out of Business.” Would we seek employment there? Of course not! And if we worked for such a company, we would wisely look for employment elsewhere. Well, the sign is evident everywhere on this world’s institutions: “Going out of Business—End Near!”
Yes, “The world is passing away,” the Bible assures us. (1 John 2:17) So, wisely, we will not adopt as role models those who are deeply involved with it.

A university degree may or may not improve your employment prospects. But one fact is indisputable: “The time left is reduced”! (1 Corinthians 7:29) For all its presumed benefits, would four years or more in a university be the best use of that remaining time?—Ephesians 5:16. Would a university education steer you toward or away from your spiritual goals? Remember, a high income is not a Christian priority. (1 Timothy 6:7, 8) Yet, a survey of U.S. university administrators described today’s students as ‘career-oriented, concerned with material success, concerned with self.’ One group of students said: “Money. It seems like all we talk about is money.” How might being immersed in an atmosphere of intense competition and selfish materialism affect you?

The WTBTS bended a little on the education scene, JWs still gossip about you if you go.

Additional Schooling or not? HOW much education is necessary to earn a living? The answer varies from one country to another. It seems in many lands that the level of schooling needed to support oneself is higher than it was a few years ago. In some cases the minimum schooling required by law is not enough. No doubt this is why an increasing number of graduates are heading back to school rather than to the workplace. Indeed, the rewards seem attractive. The New York Times cites an Economic Policy Institute report that found that “working men with only high school diplomas suffered a 7.4 percent erosion in the value of their wages from 1979 to 1987, while the wages of male college graduates rose 7 percent.” College graduates receive degrees that can open the door to employment opportunities. William B. Johnston, a senior researcher at the Hudson Institute, says: “The college degree, or even the evidence of having participated in college, has become the nation’s major form of job certification.”
